Will & Harper showcases a road trip shared between longtime friends Will Ferrell and Harper Steele — but it’s not just an ordinary adventure.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum (The Short Game, Becoming Bond, Too Funny to Fail), the documentary premiered on Jan. 22 at the Sundance Film Festival, and made its international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday (Sept. 5), per Netflix’s Tudum. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in Park City, Ferrell highlighted that the road trip took place over 17 days, and that they had “over 250 hours that was culled down to a little less than two hours.”

What is Will & Harper about?
Ferrell and Steele met on Saturday Night Live, where at the time, Steele was living as writer Andrew Steele. In 2021, Steele came out as transgender, leading the two to reunite and take the opportunity to learn more about each other and their friendship in the context of Steele’s transition on a cross-country road trip.
Steele told Netflix that she “didn’t just want to come out in places like New York or LA and forever live on either coast.”
“I love the whole country. It’s my country, and I wanted to feel a little safer being in it,” she shared. “And I thought that going across the country with Will Ferrell would help me. That’s the privilege I have knowing Will Ferrell.”
