After a month-long hiatus, The View returned today with a brand new live episode — and there was certainly a lot to catch up on, especially in politics.
During the second Hot Topics segment of the episode, the ladies weighed in on former president Donald Trump‘s latest promise that all costs associated with IVF treatment would either be covered by his administration or insurance companies.
However, Joy Behar was quick to remind the Republican nominee that having the government pay for medical care falls under his party’s definition of Socialism.
“My favorite thing is this IVF position, because what he said was the insurance company should pay for it all of the sudden. They were against it, they’re for it now — even though J.D. Vance is against it. [He] voted against it,” Behar said.
She continued, “Do you know how much it costs? $40,000 is a typical IVF procedure. And the government will pay it if the insurance companies won’t. That’s their idea of what? That’s called Socialism, according to their definition of Socialism. So Donald Trump is a Marxist.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked under Trump’s administration but has since spoken out against her former boss, agreed with Behar.
“I was working on Capitol Hill during Obamacare and I’m old enough to remember when Republicans opposed insurance mandates from the government … He’s not talking about how to pay for it,” she said, before later adding, “He’s thinking voters are gonna not pay attention and they’re gonna want the free thing. There’s no way for him to do it.”
Griffin also revealed why she “lost [her] mind” when Trump recently said women should have access to abortion for longer than six weeks.
“He wouldn’t have won a Republican primary if he ran saying six weeks was too short, you need to have access to abortion longer,” she said.
Sunny Hostin, for her part, did not believe voters would forget that Trump played a big part in the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which ruled that the Constitution of the United States protected the right to an abortion.
“Who is going to forget that he is directly responsible for packing the Supreme Court with Conservative justices and bragged about it and he is directly responsible for the Dobbs decision, which took away women’s reproductive health rights in over 30 states?” she said. “Who is going to forget that?”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
