Bad monkey. Good soundtrack.
That’s the consensus here at Decider after hearing the stacked soundtrack for Bill Lawrence’s new Apple TV+ series, Bad Monkey, which premiered with two episodes on August 14.
Since Lawrence was bringing his favorite author Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel to screen, he knew the soundtrack had to be extra special, and boy does it deliver. As ex-Miami PD detective Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) investigates a murder, the songs of musical icon Tom Petty accompany his search for answers. But the soundtrack doesn’t feature original Petty recordings — it celebrates the late artist’s music with epic covers from Eddie Vedder, Fitz and the Tantrums, Sharon Van Etten, Weezer, Stephen Marley, and more. Even Bill Lawrence’s daughter, singer Charlotte Lawrence — who makes her TV debut in the series as Caitlin Stripling — covers Petty’s “Wildflowers.”
Per SPIN, music supervisor Tony Von Pervieuz said the Bad Monkey team initially set out to secure 10 covers for Season 1 but wound up with 21 fresh takes on Tom Petty. “Each artist was hand-picked to compliment the vibe of the show, but were also favorites of mine that I could hear covering these well-placed Tom Petty songs that we featured throughout the 10 episodes. Getting the opportunity to A&R each song and build a soundtrack with all of them is a dream,” Von Pervieuz said.
The soundtrack consists of 29 songs total, with Bad Monkey’s original score composed by husband and wife duo Waz & Jamie Jackson (Cougar Town, The Village, Undateable, Life Sentence, Bluff City Law, Surviving Jack, Rush Hour). The soundtrack drops in full on October 4, 2024, but as new episodes premiere, select songs will likely be released for preview on streaming services like Apple Music and on YouTube.
As of Bad Monkey‘s premiere date, fans can listen to four covers from Fitz and The Tantrums, flipturn, Larkin Poe, and Eddie Vedder, who made headlines earlier this year for covering The English Beat’s “Save it For Later” on The Bear Season 3’s soundtrack. In an Instagram story ahead of Bad Monkey‘s premiere, Lawrence called the Tom Petty cover a “career highlight” of his, so we’ll give you a few minutes to savor it:
OK, so where’s the full soundtrack? Without further ado, here’s every song from Bad Monkey on Apple TV+.
