Tell Me Lies is back for Season 2, and once again, the soundtrack absolutely slaps.
The sophomore season of Meaghan Oppenheimer’s tumultuous college drama — based on Carola Lovering’s novel of the same name — premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, September 4, and fans of Catherine Missal, who plays Bree, will be excited to learn that their cover of “Crazy” closes out the Season 2 premiere.
Fans will recall that Tell Me Lies’ Season 1 premiere featured the original 2006 anthem from Gnarls Barkley and ended with Florence + The Machine’s cover of “Addicted to Love.” So when choosing the closing song for the Season 2 premiere, Oppenheimer wanted to use music to make another memorable statement.
“In Episode 1, the ‘Crazy’ cover that happens at the end, that’s Cat Missal singing. Bree. And Cat created that demo,” Oppenheimer told Decider via Zoom ahead of the Season 2 premiere. “I always knew I wanted Cat to create something for the show, because they’re an amazing singer and musician. And I was like, ‘How can we beat that music moment at the end of Season 1, Episode 1?’ And I thought, ‘Let’s do a callback!’ So it was nice because it feels like a callback, but also a progression. I thought Cat killed it. And our composer did an amazing job working with Cat, as well.”
The chills-inducing cover creeps into the Season 2 premiere with five minutes left in the episode. The passionate and haunting performance serves as a perfect musical accompaniment for the pivotal closing moment. No spoilers, but shit goes down, as it almost always does whenever a cover of “Crazy” starts playing.
When asked about getting to incorporate their love of music into the show, Missal told Decider, “It’s amazing. Honestly, my favorite kind of music is like early 2000s or 2010, and so much of that is in the show. I was so excited and thrilled that Meaghan asked me to do this, because she knows that I make music… It was really cool. I’m really excited about the cover and the placement. It’s very dramatic.”
Missal went on to share that their music appears in both seasons of the show, thanks to Oppenheimer. “In the first season, I sent her some demos and she put a song of mine as background music. And she did the same this season. I just feel an overwhelming support,” the Tell Me Lies star said.
As for the rest of Season 2’s soundtrack, rest assured there are plenty more 2000s bangers to come. “Oh my god, the music is so much fun,” Oppenheimer beamed. “I love doing the music. It’s one of my favorite parts of the whole thing, because I’m basically just using my high school and college playlists that I listened to.”
