‘Top Gun: Maverick’
In case you haven’t heard: it’s Glen Powell Summer. Between Hit Man and Twisters, the actor is in the midst of his movie star moment — so why not revisit 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which featured Powell’s long-delayed breakout role. The legacyquel to 1986’s Top Gun catches up with Tom Cruise’s Maverick at a crucial point in his career as a naval aviator, as he’s tasked with teaching a group of 12 TOPGUN recruits (including his late best friend’s son, played by Miles Teller) how to fly a highly dangerous mission. Powell steals every scene he’s in as the cocky and assured hotshot Hangman, with shades of Val Kilmer’s Iceman from the first movie present while he still manages to make the role entirely his own. Top Gun: Maverick shines in the quiet moments, including a touching scene between Cruise and Kilmer, as much as it soars during numerous high-octane action sequences.
