After just three weeks in theaters, and quite a few brutal memes, the Borderlands movie is coming to digital platforms tomorrow.
Based on the video game of the same name, and written and directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett as an outlaw who puts together her very own team of lowlifes and misfits, to help her track down the missing daughter (Ariana Greenblatt) of the most powerful man in the universe (Edgar Ramirez). That team includes Kevin Hart, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black as the voice of a cute little robot named Claptrap.
The movie adaptation of this sci-fi action video game was blasted by critics, and mocked by pundits for its reported $120 million budget. The movie failed to earn even half that back at the box office, coming in at a measly $22.8 million worldwide. Borderlands is doomed to be one of the biggest box office flops of 2024, but perhaps Lionsgate can earn a few more bucks with the “premium” video-on-demand release of the movie.
Here’s what you need to know about the Borderlands movie digital release and when we expect to see the Borderlands movie on streaming.
Borderlands movie digital release date:
The Borderlands movie will be released on digital, on premium video-on-demand, on Friday, August 30. You’ll be able to buy or rent the film on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The film will cost $24.99 to buy a digital copy, or $19.99 to rent. If you rent the film, you will have 48 hours to watch it after hitting play.
The Borderlands movie is not yet streaming on a subscription streaming service, but we do expect to see Borderlands streaming on Starz eventually.
When will Borderlands movie be on streaming on Starz?
There is not yet a Borderlands movie streaming release date at this time. Even though you will be able to buy or rent the new Borderlands movie online tomorrow, you won’t be able to stream it on a subscription-based streaming platform just yet.
That said, you can expect to see the Borderlands movie on Starz eventually because that is the streaming platform owned by Lionsgate. Another Lionsgate film, The Strangers: Chapter 1, was released on “premium” video-on-demand after three weeks in theaters, and is expected to stream on Starz on September 30, about 16 weeks after releasing on digital.
If the Borderlands movie—which is also coming to digital just three weeks after opening in theaters—follows the same release pattern, you can expect to see the movie on Starz in about 16 weeks time, which would be around late December 2024 or early January 2025.
That said, Starz and Lionsgate are expected to split up before the end of 2024, so it’s possible that Borderlands will end up on a different streamer. We’ll just have to wait and see.
