The Serpent Queen Season 2 ends on a rather hellacious note. The Starz show reimagines the horrific St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre as Catherine de Medici’s (Samantha Morton) version of the Red Wedding. With her back against the wall, Catherine feigns capitulation. The Protestants appear to be victorious, culminating in Princess Margot’s (Philippine Velge) political marriage to Henri of Navarre (Angus Imrie) and Catherine offering the regency to Sister Edith (Isobel Jesper Jones).
**Spoilers for The Serpent Queen Season 2 finale, now streaming on Starz**
With the help of Anjou (Stanley Morgan) and Angelica (Ruby Bentall), Catherine manages to murder all the Protestants celebrating Henri and Margot’s wedding at a banquet held in their honor. It’s a bloody affair that leads to more violence when Charles (Bill Milner) agrees to slay all of Sister Edith’s acolytes in their beds. The Bourbon brothers somehow survive, as does Henri, whom Margot fights for as an act of rebellion against Catherine.
Catherine ends The Serpent Queen Season 2 crowing about the peace she has restored to France and teasing that once the sickly Charles dies, Anjou will be king. This means that The Serpent Queen‘s creator and showrunner Justin Haythe clearly has big plans to tackle the next juicy chapter to French history. It’s an era that’s full of the drama and intrigue Serpent Queen fans have come to know and love, as well as one of the most sensual tragic romances in history.
So will there be a Serpent Queen Season 3? Here’s everything we know so far…
Will There Be a The Serpent Queen Season 3 on Starz?
We don’t know yet! Starz has yet to confirm whether or not The Serpent Queen will return for a third season.
When Decider spoke to Serpent Queen star Samantha Morton this summer, she expressed her desire to stick with the project as long as the storytelling was still there.
“I think I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d love to play Catherine as long as the storyline is relevant,” Morton said. “I think when shows go on too long, it’s because, ‘Oh, the fans love it so much. We want to give them more.’ But if the writer doesn’t have anything to write, if history runs out, I mean, these are based on real people.”
Luckily for fans of The Serpent Queen, there’s still tons of history left to explore…
What Would The Serpent Queen Season 3 Potentially Cover in History? Queen Margot and the War of the Three Henrys
The Serpent Queen Season 2 finale very neatly hints at major historical events yet to unfold.
Catherine herself teases that her second son, Anjou, will succeed the dying Charles as King. History will not only know him as Henri III, but a key player in the conflict known as “The War of the Three Henrys.” Anjou, Henri of Navarre, and the Duc de Guise’s (Raza Jaffrey) son Henri are the three Henrys. Ultimately, Anjou orders the execution of the Catholic Duke of Guise and is then assassinated by a Catholic fanatic in turn. Margot’s new husband, the sociopathic Henri, becomes the first Bourbon king.
Margot and Henri’s marriage is also ripe with potential drama that has been sensationalized in the past by Alexandre Dumas and in the ’90s French film, La Reine Margot. Given the fact that The Serpent Queen loves to dramatize the more scandalous parts of Catherine’s history, we should expect to meet a charismatic soldier named La Môle in a potential Serpent Queen Season 3…
When Will The Serpent Queen Season 3 Premiere on Starz?
If Starz orders The Serpent Queen Season 3, the earliest fans should expect new episodes would be 2026. Past seasons have taken about two years to produce, film, and get to the screen.
