This week’s new movies on VOD include the A24 drama Janet Planet, starring Julianne Nicholson, the digital release of A Quiet Place: Day One, Mia Goth in MaXXXine, and the Dakota Johnson-Sean Penn vehicle (literally, takes place in a a vehicle), Daddio.
In Daddio, Johnson stars as a young woman whose rode home from JFK airport becomes an adventure thanks to the expansive, often opinionated, sometimes therapeutic conversation she has with with the cab driver (Penn) who picks her up.
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place: Day One is the third installment of the A Quiet Place. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff, A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel that takes place before the events of the first movie and it follows a woman named Sam (Nyong’o) who must survive an alien invasion in New York City — and just like in the first two movies, those aliens happen to have extremely sensitive hearing.
Janet Planet
Julianne Nicholson, whose performance in Mare of Easttown still haunts me with how great it was, stars in Janet Planet, the latest film from A24. The movie follows an 11-year-old girl named Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) who spends the summer of 1991 at their home in Western Massachusetts with her mother Janet (Nicholson) and three strangers.
MaXXXine
Mia Goth stars as a ’70s porn actress named Maxine Minx in the final film of Ti West’s slasher-horror trilogy, MaXXXine, which serves as a sequel to her previous film, X. The film also features a seriously impressive supporting cast, including Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon. MaXXXine arrived on demand on Friday.
