Is New Jack City getting a remake?
The 1991 crime drama is certainly ripe for one, especially in our reboot-riddled day and age — after all, Twisters just dropped, there is an upcoming Beetlejuice sequel and even Mean Girls got its own second act. But is New Jack City next?
Wesley Snipes earned an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for his portrayal of Nino Brown, a New York City drug lord during the ’80s crack epidemic, in the film. Meanwhile, Detective Scotty Appleton (Ice-T) is out to put an end to his dealings.
The film also features the talents of Allen Payne, Chris Rock, Mario Van Peebles — who also directed the film — Michael Michele, Bill Nunn, Russell Wong, Bill Cobbs, Christopher Williams, Judd Nelson and Vanessa Williams, just to name a few.
So, is a New Jack City remake at Netflix on the horizon? Or is this rumor solely what it is — a rumor? Here’s what we know.
Is there a New Jack City remake in the works at Netflix?
As of now, there are no confirmed reports that a New Jack City remake is being made, let alone one being produced by Netflix.
The Direct and Dexerto debunked rumors of a remake starring Mahershala Ali back in January after a poster went viral from an account known for sharing promotional posters for fake films — in fact, the account was also responsible for spurring rumors about a Golden Girls reboot that even Maya Rudolph, one of its alleged stars, caught wind of. The forged New Jack City remake poster had teased a March 2024 release.
As noted by The Direct, Deadline had written back in 2019 about a reboot at Warner Bros., with Malcolm M. Mays reportedly set to serve as the writer. Per NME, Snipes had told Blavity News’ Shadow and Act that he was “not associated” with the project.
