There’s only One Tree Hill — but it might be getting a sequel.
According to a new report from Variety, a sequel series of the early aughts teen drama is currently in the works at Netflix, with OG stars Hilarie Burton Morgan, Sophia Bush and Danneel Ackles serving as executive producers.
Sources tell the outlet that Burton Morgan and Bush will reprise their iconic roles as Peyton Sawyer and Brooke Davis, respectively. Ackles, who played Rachel Gatina, is also in talks to return. The original cast further included Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson and Lee Norris; however, it’s currently unknown if they will appear in the series.
Based in the fictional town of Tree Hill, the hit teen drama — which ran for nine seasons between 2003 and 2012 — initially honed in on the competitive rivalry between teenage basketball stars (and half-brothers) Nathan Scott (Lafferty) and Lucas Scott (Murray).
Mark Schwahn, who created the original show, will have no involvement in the sequel series as Burton Morgan and other cast and crew members have accused him of assault and harassment in recent years.
According to Burton Morgan, who co-hosts the Drama Queens podcast with Bush and Lenz, Murray once stood up for her after Schwahn allegedly grabbed her at a bar in 2007.
“Chad walked up and goes, ‘What are you doing?’ He said that to our boss in the bar,” she said in a March 2023 episode of the podcast, per Deadline. “He watched our boss grab me in front of a lot of people, and you know, Chad didn’t have anything to lose, ’cause he knew our boss hated him, anyway.”
The actress also claimed that Schwahn wrote himself into a scene when she wasn’t speaking to him, prompting her to invite her dad onto the set to protect her from needing to interact with her former boss.
“It was so creepy,” Burton recalled in an August 2023 episode of Drama Queens. “I got the script and I was like, ‘All right, it’s one day of work. It’s just one day of work.'”
DECIDER has reached out to reps for Burton Morgan and Bush for comment on the sequel news, but did not hear back by the time of publication.
In the meantime, you can stream One Tree Hill on Hulu and Max.
