A family tests out a home AI device that causes some terrifying effects on their lives in Afraid, which is coming to theaters this week. Luckily, we have you covered on all of the ways you can watch this horrifying flick!
In this film, Curtis (John Cho) and his faily are chosen to be the testers of a new smart AI home device called AIA. AIA is meant to serve as a type of family assistant. The device is installed and quickly learns the needs of everyone in the family in order to help them in the best ways possible. However, AIA might be learning too much and could be trying to be too protective. Suddenly, AIA becomes self-aware and interferes in the family’s lives so that only the artificial intelligence has power.
So, where can you watch Afraid? Is it on Netflix? What about Max?
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:
WHERE TO WATCH AFRAID:
Currently, the only way that you can watch Afraid is to go to a movie theater when it releases on Friday, August 30. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you will just have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, YouTube and Amazon, or becomes available to stream on Netflix. Read on for more information.
WILL AFRAID BE ON NETFLIX?
Afraid will likely be on Netflix because of a deal inked between the streaming platform and Sony Pictures Releasing that gives the streamer rights to all the company’s theatrical films starting in 2022.
While a streaming release date for Afraid has not yet been announced, we can make an estimate on the date based on another recent Sony film. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was released in theaters on March 22, 2024, before coming to Netflix on July 22, 2024 — around four months after it debuted. If Afraid follows the same pattern, we could be watching the film from the comfort of our homes by late December 2024.
WILL AFRAID BE ON HBO MAX?
No, Afraid will not be on Max, previously known as HBO Max, since it’s not a Warner Bros. Discovery movie.
