Fox Cancels ‘Pivoting,’ ‘Our Kind of People’ After Just One Season Each

Fox has decided to drop its comedy Pivoting as well as Our Kind of People after just one season each.

The latter is particularly surprising as it was one of Fox’s first ever straight-to-series orders. The show from Lee Daniels and Karin Gist had skipped the network’s regular pilot season in an attempt to shift away from traditional development methods.

Inspired by Lawrence Otis Graham’s 1999 book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, Our Kind of People starred Yaya DaCosta as Angela Vaughn, a single mother who embarks on a mission to reclaim her family name when she discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past.

Fox commissioned a total of 12 episodes with its finale airing in January. The show, whose cast also features Morris Chestnut and Joe Morton, received mixed reviews from critics and modest viewership. It averaged just below 2.1 million viewers per episode according to Nielsen’s seven-day ratings.

Pivoting had a decent premiere with high viewership following an NFL broadcast but quickly retreated in the ratings. The comedy series starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Eliza Coupe and Maggie Q had a midseason spike in views and received mostly strong reviews but ended up averaging just 1.85 million viewers over its 10-episode run.

Fox will have its upfront presentation on Monday afternoon, before which the network is expected to announce more renewals and series orders. Pivoting and Our Kind of People join the previously canceled The Big Leap in this season’s axed programs. Live-action comedies Call Me Kat and Welcome to Flatch are still pending a decision as well as animated series Duncanville, Housebroken and veteran dramas 911, 911: Lone Star and The Resident.
