After seven years of hosting Tucker Carlson Tonight, host Tucker Carlson and Fox News have “agreed to part ways,” effective immediately.
The surprising news of Carlson’s abrupt departure from the network — where he has worked for 14 years — was announced Monday morning.
“We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” a Fox News Media spokesperson said in a press release, per The Associated Press.
With Carlson’s final taping having aired on Friday, April 21, an interim program, Fox News Tonight, will fill the time slot until the network finds a permanent replacement for the popular yet controversial host. In the meantime, the show will be hosted by a rotating door of various Fox News personalities, according to Fox.
Carlson first joined the network as a political contributor in 2009 before he joined FOX & Friends Weekend, where he worked from 2012 to 2016. He ultimately replaced Bill O’Reilly in 2016 with his the launch of his own program, Tucker Carlson Tonight — which is among the top-rated cable news shows, bringing in over 3 million viewers per night.
The show is described by the network as an “hour of spirited debate and powerful reporting.”
Before joining Fox, Carlson worked for both MSNBC and CNN. He also founded the political news website, The Daily Caller, in 2010. However, he stepped down from his editorial role in 2016 and sold his stake in the company in 2020.
Fox News isn’t the only network getting a shakeup in its daily lineup. It was also announced earlier today that CNN had dropped longtime anchor Don Lemon after nearly two decades. The decision came after weeks of controversy surrounding the television personality, including his alleged “volatile” behavior.
