Danielle Fishel has disclosed her DCIS diagnosis.
The Boy Meets World star revealed her health news to fans on Monday’s (Aug. 19) installment of her Pod Meets World podcast, per Us Weekly. After noting that her co-hosts and former co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle “were two of the first people [she] told the news to,” she revealed that she was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which she said “stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.”
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “DCIS accounts for 20% of breast cancers.”
Fortunately, Fishel assured fans that it is “very, very, very early.”
“It’s technically stage zero,” she explained. “To be specific, just because I like too much information all the time, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion.”
She also highlighted that she is “going to be fine” and is “having surgery to remove it,” in addition to being “on some follow-up treatment” afterward.
“I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days,” she added.
As for why she chose to share the news of her diagnosis with listeners, she cited learning “from the experiences of others,” including author Glennon Doyle, who ultimately taught her that “the place you have the most to learn from is at the very beginning of a story or in the very messy middle of a story.”
She also noted that “the only reason” she was able to catch this cancer at stage zero was a text message she received reminding her that her “yearly mammogram” was approaching. Fishel said that she scheduled her appointment that same day.
“I want to share this because I hope that it will encourage anyone to get in there. If it’s time for your appointment, if you’ve never had an appointment before, get in there. If you have to find out you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage zero if possible,” she urged.
Fishel iterated that she still has “big decisions ahead” of her in terms of treatment, and told listeners that she is still aiming to “make it for every episode,” though it may be possible that they will have to “put things on hold.”
While both Friedle and Strong issued their support for Fishel, fans also flooded the podcast’s Instagram page with well wishes for the actress, and thanked her for sharing her story.
