After six engaging episodes, AMC’s Monsieur Spade aired its Season 1 finale on Sunday, February 18. So is Sam Spade (Clive Owen) ready for retirement again? Or do more high-stakes investigations await?
Co-created by Emmy winners Scott Frank and Tom Fontana Monsieur Spade followed the legendary detective from Dashiell Hammett’s novel The Maltese Falcon in 1963 as he unexpectedly emerged from a peaceful retirement in the South of France following the murder of local nuns. When his old adversary unexpectedly turns up and children’s lives were put in danger, Sam Spade hauled out his detective hat and gun and sprung back into action.
After gunfire, close calls, and shocking reveals, Episode 6 brought Monsieur Spade‘s compelling case to a close. But have we seen the last of Spade? Only time (and this article) will tell.
Curious if Monsieur Spade Season 2 is coming to AMC? If AMC renewed or canceled the show? Or if Monsieur Spade is a limited series? Here’s everything we know about the future of Monsieur Spade.
Will There Be A Monsieur Spade Season 2 On AMC Or Is It A Limited Series?
Monsieur Spade was introduced as a limited crime drama, which means its six-episode run was the original vision, but after seeing Clive Owen as Sam Spade I understand why fans would want more. With such a flexible format, Monsieur Spade certainly feels like it has potential for a mystery-of-the-week — or in this case, investigation-of-the-season — type run, but reps for the show told Decider there’s no Season 2 news to share as of now, saying “Monsieur Spade is a limited series.”
As it currently stands, Monsieur Spade‘s Season 1 finale is the series finale. So let’s refresh ourselves on the ending, shall we?
Monsieur Spade Ending Explained:
If you’re looking for a detailed finale recap, Decider’s Monsieur Spade Ending Explained article has you covered. But if you want to skip to the end and find out what happened with Spade, Teresa, Marguerite, Zayd, Philippe, George and Cynthia, and the rest of Monsieur Spade‘s main characters, here’s what you need to know.
In the final minutes of Monsieur Spade, Cynthia murders George after learning of his plans to betray her, the monk from earlier in the series Teresa hostage at knifepoint, and Philippe preps for his plan to exchange Zayd for cash. After Patrice gets tipped off about a woman with a gun and an Algerian boy on the bridge, the plan is set into motion. Shots start flying with Zayd and Teresa in danger, but the kids make a run for it and Patrice winds up saving the day.
After Marguerite finds Zayd safe in an alleyway, Virginia Dell, a retired Lieutenant Kernel and gathers Spade, Marguerite, Cynthia, Philippe, Henri, and everyone involved with the child in a room. Ultimately, she takes him back home, Philippe is arrested for the murder of Jean-Pierre, Spade hears his old office in San Fransisco has a new tenant named Eddie Soloman, and he tells Cynthia to “go fuck yourself in the crumpet with a cricket bat.”
While watching Philippe get taken into custody, Spade and Teresa are sharing a moment. Teresa tells him, “I’ll be ok if you don’t want me around.” And he replies, “Do me a favor. Call me Sam.” The two stand there in their sunglasses looking like a badass father/daughter duo, and it’s implied that they, along with Marguerite, will take care of each other moving forward. Back at home in his robe, Spade stores his gun, coat, and passport back in his closet signaling his return to retirement, but he keeps his hat out and carries it to the pool. He puts the hat on, takes the robe off, and stands outside naked in silence, until a voice yells, “Hey, Mr. Spade. Are you coming in or not?” With a splash, the end credits roll.
