Tell Me Lies is back with a bang and one heck of a Season 2 premiere cliffhanger.
Meaghan Oppenheimer’s turbulent college drama returned to Hulu with its first two Season 2 episodes on September 4, and after its premiere delivers twists, turns, new character introductions, and the promise of much more chaos to come, Tell Me Lies drops a major relationship reveal. (Warning: Season 2 premiere spoilers ahead!)
In the final moments of Tell Me Lies Season 2, Episode 1, as Catherine Missal’s iconic cover of “Crazy” plays, viewers learn that Pippa (Sonia Mena) and Diana (Alicia Crowder) are dating in 2015!
The jaw-dropping reveal comes after Pippa leaves Bree (Missal) and Evan’s (Branden Cook) pre-wedding festivities and heads home to her apartment, where Diana is waiting for her in bed. After Stephen’s (Jackson White) shocking Season 1 engagement reveal, we knew he wasn’t with Diana post-college. But considering Diana and Pippa weren’t really friends in Season 1 and Pippa was dating Wrigley (Spencer House) at school, the news came as quite a shock.
After Season 2’s premiere, we know next to nothing about how Pippa and Diana got together in 2015. Yet here we are, shipping Pippana hardcore — as are Tell Me Lies stars Mena and Crowder.
“I love that,” Crowder exclaimed over Zoom when Decider floated “Pippana” as an official couple name. “I love that. We tried to make Prigley happen last season. Nobody wanted it. But Pippana is prime. I love it,” Mena added.
When asked what their initial reactions were upon learning their characters were together in 2015, the actors revealed they just as surprised as fans, but thrilled they got to work together more closely in Season 2.
“It was exciting. I thought it was really fun. I didn’t see it coming, so I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, if I’m surprised, then hopefully other people will be as surprised by it,'” Mena told Decider. “It was really fun working with Alicia, obviously. And finding all those scenes together. We were saying, it’s very Holes. They’re like Sam (Dulé Hill) and what’s her name (Patricia Arquette’s Kissin’ Kate Barlow).”
“I was definitely shocked. Like, did not see that coming in at all. And it was so much fun,” Crowder added. “It was fun to just branch out…my experience is very similar to Diana’s. I think that Diana was very isolated last season and only had a relationship with Stephen. And so now getting able to explore what a different kind of relationship looks like is really exciting and fun as an actor — to get to play on a very different dynamic and discover different parts of the character.”
While we’ll have to wait and see when and if the circumstances around Pippa and Diana’s 2015 relationship are revealed in the future, Tell Me Lies showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer says she’s “definitely” open to exploring more of the post-college years and showing how the two took that next step.
“Definitely. I think that in Season 2 we obviously — I don’t want to give too many spoilers away — but we see the beginning of them just even getting to care about each other,” Oppenheimer told Decider over Zoom. “And I think obviously there’s so much that has to happen in the eight years that we have not seen. So yeah, I think it would be nice to see more of that.”
New episodes of Tell Me Lies Season 2 premiere Wednesdays on Hulu.
