‘Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants’
We’re in the middle of the worst sports week of the year. Basketball and hockey have been over for weeks, baseball is taking its annual extended All-Star break, and football — either college or pro — doesn’t start back up in earnest for well over a month. Enter HBO and Netflix, both of whom know that football fans are positively STARVING for something to watch. Netflix just released Receiver, a series focused on the mercurial athletes that play the wide receiver position, but HBO went in another direction with their new spin-off from the widely popular Hard Knocks franchise.
Instead of focusing on the players trying to make the team, this entry instead trains its lenses on the pencil pushers who are responsible for identifying and recruiting NFL talent, as well getting them to sign on the line that is dotted. It’s less human interest-focused than what you’re used to seeing on Hard Knocks, but very much appeals to the wonky nerds (like me) who listen to NFL podcasts 52 weeks a year and spend months obsessing over their fantasy football rosters.
