‘Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened’
Before Merrily We Roll Along was a musical theater triumph with the 2024 Broadway revival netting four Tony Awards including Best Revival, it was composer Stephen Sondheim’s most heartbreaking flop — the original Broadway production closed after just 16 performances in 1981. The 2016 doc Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened tells the story of the making of that musical with the people closest to it; it was even directed by Lonny Price, who created the role of Charley Kringas (who Daniel Radcliffe just won a Tony for portraying) in the original production of Merrily. It features appearances by original cast members (including Seinfeld‘s Jason Alexander), director Hal Price, Sondheim himself, and never-before-seen clips from the rehearsal process; and examines the journey they all went on — from dreams coming true to the heartbreak of it ending so soon.
