‘Sense and Sensibility’ (1995)
Ang Lee’s 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility might be the superlative Jane Austen film adaptations of all time. The Chinese auteur applies his trademark lyricism to the incredibly romantic tale of the Dashwood sisters. After their beloved father dies, leaving his estate to his first born son, Elinor (Emma Thompson) and Marianne (Kate Winslet) find themselves booted out of the higher ranks of society just when they need those connections the most. Through their journeys, the sensible Elinor falls in love with Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), a kind-hearted gentleman who evaporates for some reason just as they form a deep attachment. The sensitive Marianne, meanwhile, falls madly for the dashing Mr. Willoughby (Greg Wise) and ignores the attentions of older suitor Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman). Sense and Sensibility not only honors Austen’s intentions on the page, but makes these timeless characters feel of our moment.
