‘The Old Guard’
When you think “comfort movies,” a bloody action flick isn’t quite what comes to mind, right? But whenever I want to watch something familiar that makes me smile, I often find myself pressing play on The Old Guard. There’s just something about Charlize Theron-led action movies! The Old Guard, which dropped on Netflix in the thick of the pandemic, is inspired by the comic series of the same name about a group of mercenaries who literally can’t die — they’re immortal, and they dream of each other until they meet. Theron plays the oldest of the crew, which also includes one of Napoleon’s soldiers, two men who met in the Crusades and eventually started a centuries-long romance, and a newly immortal American soldier. When big pharma comes for them to figure out how to monetize immortality, the crew is forced to fight back to defend themselves and one another. Getting stabbed (or worse!) is status quo for the group, who really just see it as a minor annoyance rather than an emergency, and it leads to some really well-crafted action sequences where the group’s chemistry is at its best as they fight together like people who have been doing together it for hundreds of years.
